Rebecca Ng
Born in the 1970s, Rebecca grew up in Singapore, and like many others of her age, was put through a system where one's worth was measured by social achievements and professional qualification. Even though she had always wanted to be a ballet dancer, craving creativity and freedom, she was educated with a Business Degree, training and managing people instead.
A non-conformist with a burning desire to succeed, Rebecca struggled for many years to find her niche, unmotivated and misunderstood. Long working hours and under-exercised, she suffered from a prolapsed disc to her lower back at the age of 21 in addition to many other physical aliments. She took her first yoga class in 2002 in an attempt to save her body but nothing evolved from there.
She remained gaunt, frustrated and fixated and turned to writing in private as a form of release. With eight years of politicking in the corporate world and a failed marriage under her belt, she was completely disheartened and disillusioned. She left her position as a manager in a Pilates studio and took a two year break.
It was during the break when she took the practice of yoga more seriously. The illumination Yoga brought to her humbled and moved her immensely, and she began to turn her life around. Filled with gratitude to the enlightenment she had received, she was inspired to serve by sharing the poignant beauty and goodness of this ancient wisdom. Her background as a trainer coupled with her passion in body movement gave her a distinct advantage. Working consistently to regain her physical health, she started teaching in 2004 at the encouragement of her Foundation Yoga Teacher. In 2005, she completed her Teacher's Training in the Sivananda Tradition from Chennai, India.
The career switch was challenging as she dealt with disapproving family members and friends who deemed her choice as willful and unrealistic. Recognizing her Dharma, Rebecca has been unwavering in her pursuit. In 2006, she founded her own school Nile Yoga - named after the river Nile. Symbolic to a Chinese character in her name, 'Jiang', (meaning 'river'), it reflected her willingness to flow with life through Graciousness, Strength, Beauty and Poise. She was thankful to the currents and waves in her early years for showing her the different dimensions of life, giving her the capacity and authenticity to share from a deeper space.
It was also in 2006 when she began the practice of Anusara Yoga, created by Founder John Friend. Its Universal Principles of alignment and Tantric philosophy created even more expansion and life. Relating intimately through existence, experiences and experiment, Rebecca embraced the Anusara system fully and travels extensively to study and shares her knowledge through classes, workshops and retreats. She is especially grateful to Bo Srey, Desiree Rumbaugh and Carlos Pomeda for their beautiful introduction to this path, and Patrick Creelman and Amy Ippoliti for their love and support.
Today, a Yoga Teacher by Passion, a Traveller by Heart and a Writer in Private, Rebecca inspires many through the spirit of yoga. She hopes to touch more lives and inspires her students, just as yoga has done for her. She shares an insight, ~ “ Through Compassion, Courage and Curiosity, we attained Peace, Love and Joy; and ultimate Freedom will come when you take full responsibility for who you are, and what you have created.”
